Our client is the premier track and vehicle research centre in Australia and it provides world leading solutions in the areas of wheel-rail interface design, track design and maintenance as well as rollingstock assessments and modelling. They undertakes technology development, applied research and consulting activities for the railway industry.

They are looking for a Principal Vehicle-Track Engineer to be responsible for undertaking complex railway engineering analysis, applied research and assessment of wheel-rail interface design, rolling stock assessments and modelling as well as related activities in the areas of track design and maintenance within the rail industry.

The Principal Vehicle- Track Engineer will lead and manage research and project teams within the Institute to deliver on innovative solutions and process and practice improvement operations that require high-level external client contracts and optimum data collection and project methodologies. The position will also develop new business related to railway engineering, lead and mentor staff, and keep abreast of emerging disciplines, trends and issues, related to the industry.

Job Requirements


- A relevant tertiary qualification at post-graduate level with extensive technical and relevant experience; or
- An equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training with a minimum of 10 years full time experience in rollingstock design and/or maintenance. Some experience with wheel-rail interface assessment and management is desirable
Knowledge and Skill
- Demonstrated safety performance and strict adherence to safety protocols. The ability to pass safety critical medicals and random drug and alcohol testing
- Demonstrated experience in undertaking technical assessments within their area of expertise
- Excellent ability to solve problems by using appropriate analytical tools, discretion, innovation and the exercise of high level diagnostic skills within areas of functional responsibility or professional expertise
- Significant experience in project management along with sound experience in managing customer portfolios and relationships
- Demonstrated high level of written and oral communication skills including capacity to communicate with individuals at all levels in the organization (shop floor to managers) and an ability to effectively analyse information and produce clear, succinct reports and documents
- Planning and organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise multiple tasks and set and meet deadlines
- Well-developed team leadership skills including the ability to lead and motivate staff in a team environment
- Flexibility to undertake travel, field work, and emergency or urgent work to fulfil customer needs. There is an expectation that the candidate would be available for up to 12 weeks per year for site work, either nationally or internationally
- Demonstrated level of computer literacy and proficiency in the production of high level work using software such as Microsoft Office applications and specified University software programs, with the capability and willingness to learn new packages as appropriate; experience with data acquisition systems advantageous, but not essential
- A demonstrated awareness of the principles of confidentiality, privacy and information handling
- Knowledge of Australian and International Standards in the area of expertise
