Our client is seeking an Onboard Engineer to provide detailed technical coordination and engineering support for the physical and functional integration of the new 5G/FRMCS radios and associated ETCS baseline upgrade onto the NGR and QTMP train types. The role focuses on train-level interfaces, installation design, configuration, testability, maintainability and practical fleet application. Supported by RPEQ registration in electrical engineering, the Onboard Engineer works with external parties to resolve rollingstock fitment and integration matters and to ensure that the delivered train modifications are safe, compliant, supportable and suitable for operational use.

Core scope for this role will include, but will not be limited to:
- Act as the primary day-to-day technical interface for train-level fitment and integration matters across NGR and QTMP rollingstock.
- Coordinate train surveys, baseline configuration capture, equipment location assessment, cable routing, antenna placement, access, structural and environmental interfaces.
- Review and support development of installation designs, wiring diagrams, schematics, equipment layouts, mounting arrangements, bills of material, work instructions and modification packs.
- Assess interfaces between the new radio equipment, ETCS onboard equipment, driver-machine interfaces, train control and management systems, power supplies, antennas and existing cab equipment.
- Coordinate compatibility, electromagnetic compatibility, earthing, bonding, environmental, fire, human factors, maintainability and depot-support considerations.
- Support management of train-type variants, software and hardware configurations, serialised assets, installation baselines and as-built records.
- Participate in design reviews, mock-ups, first-in-class installation reviews, test readiness reviews, fault investigations and technical close-out activities.
- Support definition and review of inspection and test plans, installation checks, static and dynamic train tests, regression testing and commissioning evidence.
- Provide technical support in the State Lab and at trains, depots or supplier facilities during integration, testing and fault resolution.
- Assess defects, non-conformances, technical queries, concessions and proposed modifications, ensuring impacts are understood and appropriately approved.
- Coordinate maintainability, spares, special tools, diagnostic data, training, manuals and through-life support inputs for the modified fleets.
- Prepare or certify electrical engineering advice and outputs as required under the RPEQ framework.

- Demonstrated hands-on experience with rollingstock surveys, installation design, modification packs, first-in-class fitment, testing, fault finding and configuration control.
- Experience fitting signalling systems to rollingstock. Direct ETCS experience is desirable but not mandatory.
- Knowledge of rollingstock electrical interfaces, EMC, earthing and bonding, cabling, environmental qualification, maintainability and fleet configuration management.
- Ability to work safely and effectively in depots, laboratories, trains and supplier facilities and to produce clear, evidence-based technical records.
