Our client is seeking a Lead Design Engineer to lead, coordinate, and execute the engineering design activities related to power systems in railway infrastructure projects, ensuring that all designs meet technical, regulatory, and safety standards and align with project schedules and budgets.
Key Responsibilities:
Design & Technical Leadership
- Lead the end-to-end design lifecycle for railway power systems, covering Concept Design, Preliminary Design, Detailed Design and As-Built Documentation based on project scope and requirement
- Develop and validate system architecture for traction power supply systems and related switching stations subject to projects requirement (Etc: TPSS, 750Vdc, Integrate with Related DC Traction Equipment) and OCS & TPS related Design.
- Design high voltage (HV), medium voltage (MV) and low voltage (LV) systems for rail substations including feeder stations, auto transformer stations and sectioning posts based on projects requirement
- Ensure robust design of auxiliary power supply systems for stations, depots, and tunnels (e.g., UPS, emergency generators, LV boards).
Design earthing and bonding systems, lightning protection, and EMC/EMI mitigation strategies in compliance with rail safety standards.
- Oversee the integration of railway power systems with SCADA, protection relays, remote terminal units (RTUs), and control centres.
- Perform load flow, fault level and protection coordination studies using software tools such as ETAP, DIgSILENT, or PSCAD to validate system performance and safety.
- Lead interface management with other disciplines (signaling, telecommunications, trackwork, M&E, and civil structures) to ensure coordinated and conflict-free design deliverable.
- Collaborate with rolling stock teams to ensure traction power compatibility, regeneration management, and interface with train onboard systems.
- Prepare and review functional specifications, interface control documents (ICDs), design calculation reports, and protection philosophy documents.
- Drive innovation and application of digital engineering, Building Information Modelling (BIM), and Digital Twin concepts in the power system design process.
- Coordinate value engineering efforts to optimize design efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and lifecycle performance without compromising safety or reliability.
- Validate contractor/vendor designs and ensure compliance with employer requirements, statutory regulations, and international best practices.
- Conduct design audits and lead internal/external Design Reviews, Hazard Identification (HAZID), and Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) workshops as part of safety assurance.
- Develop design management plans, workflows, and quality assurance procedures for internal teams and subcontractors.
- Stay current with advancements in railway electrification technologies (e.g., energy storage integration, smart grid applications, pantograph monitoring) and embed modern solutions into system designs.
Project Execution & Coordination
- Act as the technical lead in multidisciplinary project teams, working closely with civil, signaling, and mechanical disciplines.
- Liaise with clients, consultants, utility providers, and authorities to address technical queries and approvals
- Provide technical input for procurement activities, vendor selection, and design validation.
- Review and approve vendor designs and shop drawings, ensuring conformity with project requirements.
- Support projects on design related issues as and when required
Team Management & Mentoring
- Supervise and mentor junior engineers and CAD technicians.
- Conduct design reviews and technical workshops to ensure quality and consistency across design deliverable.
- Promote knowledge sharing and continuous improvement within the engineering team.
Quality, Safety & Compliance
- Ensure all design activities align with project HSE (Health, Safety & Environment) plans and RAMS (Reliability, Availability, Maintainability, Safety) principles.
- Conduct design risk assessments and support the Safety Assurance team in hazard identification and mitigation processes.
- Maintain accurate design documentation and change management records
